Opinion Pocket Knife #12 The blade is 12cm long and made of carbon steel. The first Opinel pocket knives were made of carbon steel. Blades made of this steel are renowned for their extremely high quality and strength. With a carbon content of around 0,90 %, the blade is very strong, maintains its sharpness and is easy to sharpen. The carbon steel is first smelted in Germany and then the alloy is finished in France.

Opinzel pocket knives made of carbon steel are recommended to be kept out of damp environments and to be well drained and lubricated after use. All carbon steel blades can oxidise over time and develop a dark grey colour - but this does not affect the sharpness or quality of the knife.

The traditional Opinel blade is of the jatagan type. This shape was inspired by the curved point of the Turkish sword. The Jatagan blade is characterised by its convex profile, which gives it strength and allows it to be sharpened repeatedly.

Handle

For the handles, Opinel usually chooses beech wood. Beech trees grown on French farms are hard, resistant to external influences and easy to work. The wood has a homogeneous appearance and its light colour can vary from yellow to pink. Beech wood can be identified by its many dark streaks. The handle is varnished to protect it from moisture and dirt.

Virobloc safety ring
The Opinel pocket knife No. 12, like all Opinel curved knives from No. 6 onwards, has a Virobloc safety ring invented by Marcel Opinel in 1955. The Virobloc ring, cut from stainless steel, consists of two parts: a fixed and a sliding part. The blade is locked in both a folded position (for safe handling) and a folded position (for safety during transport).
